Gault&Millau's review 2025

The Hong Kong-based Mandarin Oriental Group is expanding its portfolio and acquiring the only luxury hotel on the Left Bank—one of Paris’s most iconic addresses. A symbol of both happier times (in the 1910s, it welcomed visitors from the provinces who came to shop at Le Bon Marché) and darker ones (when it served as the headquarters of German counterintelligence in 1940), this luxury hotel has gradually become a haven for artists and writers in the capital. Albert Cohen, notably, wrote *Belle du Seigneur* there… Renamed Mandarin Oriental Lutetia in April 2025 after the Asian group took over management, the palace has regained its former splendor under the leadership of Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who redesigned the entire property for its 2018 reopening while remaining faithful to its legendary décor—a unique blend of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Prioritizing natural light and fine materials, the architect envisioned a space with clean, minimalist lines. Visible from Boulevard Raspail, the impressive Bar Joséphine unfolds around a 10-meter-long bar, the domain of head bartender Angelo Forte, who treats the Parisian elite to delicious cocktails. The Brasserie Lutetia, led by chef Patrick Charvet, is right next door to the Saint-Germain, a legendary spot with its magnificent glass roof painted by artist Fabrice Hybert. Equally remarkable, the 184 rooms and suites exude a understated and elegant style with beige and blue tones and marble-clad bathrooms. Finally, a special mention goes to the luxurious Akasha spa and its 17-meter-long pool, which make this palace one of the most exclusive and unique in the capital. The property remains owned by the Israeli group Alrov.
