“Pazza Idea”—a “crazy idea”—to open this restaurant in 2022 for Angelo Perna and Leonardo Vaira, at the start of the Alsace Wine Route. The two partners, both born in Mattinata, a small town on the Adriatic Sea, designed their restaurant’s decor as a tribute to their roots. Angelo, the pizza chef, and Leonardo, the head chef, reinvent a new menu each season, featuring primarily fish, and work with exceptional meats such as dry-aged beef and Wagyu beef. Special recommendations are regularly featured among the daily specials. As a nod to his grandmother, Leonardo features one of her recipes every day, such as Nonna Maria’s orecchiette with meatballs in tomato sauce. With a strict eye for quality ingredients, they import olive oil from their family’s olive groves: Mattinata is home to 6,000 residents and 600,000 olive trees. In the summer, enjoy the outdoor bar and the terrace shaded by a magnificent wisteria. Ma Che Idea is Mulhouse’s go-to spot for takeout pizza.
