A fine exercise in style for this 2009 vintage cuvée made from equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Supported by a delicate effervescence and a complex, gourmet nose with aromas of dried fruit, the palate is full-bodied with notes of custard. The finish is enveloping.

Located in Bouzy, in the heart of the sun-drenched “grands noirs” region, the Barnaut estate—founded in 1874 by Edmond Barnaut—is now run by Philippe and Guillaume Secondé. They practice cover cropping and limit themselves to replacing old vines rather than uprooting entire plots, in order to increase the age of the vines. This approach allows them to produce champagnes characterized by lively fruitiness. The vineyard, managed in accordance with HVE3 certification, is a fine example of the Bouzy terroir. All the lieux-dits are cultivated on a plot-by-plot basis, allowing them to offer a range of nine cuvées, including a still wine—the famous red Bouzy.
